Dr. Gena Ross campaigned to represent Missouri’s 6th congressional district against 20-year incumbent Sam Graves (R). Ross contracted the Corona Virus on the campaign trail and was hospitalized in March and April, 2020 for a total of nine days.
Determined not to give up Ross stated that God let her live for a purpose. Ross stayed in the Primary race and on August 4, 2020, she defeated 4 opponents in the 2020 U.S. House of Representatives primary election, advancing to the November general election in the solidly Republican congressional district.
Ross lost the election on November 3, 2020. Nevertheless, she is the first African-American woman to run for office for the seat of U.S. House of Representatives, Missouri, District 6. She previously ran in the General Election in 2019 for the Platte County RIII School Board District and is a former Constituent Services Representative, she represented former US Senator Claire McCaskill (Missouri).
Ross is a native of Minneapolis, MN, raised by single mother Evangelist Gloria Ross. Ross has been living in Missouri for twelve years: ten of those years have been in Platte City, Missouri. She has three young adult children who have all graduated from Platte County High School in Platte City, Missouri.
Ross has an earned PhD in Public Policy & Administration and a Master’s degree in Public Administration both obtained from Walden University in Minneapolis, MN. In addition, she has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from American Intercontinental University, Schaumburg, IL and an Associates in Urban Ministries from North Central University in Minneapolis, MN. Ross is an Associate Professor of Business at Kansas City Kansas Community College and an Adjunct Instructor at Baker University- School of Professional Graduate Studies.
Ross is a licensed Evangelist Missionary and proud member of Carter Memorial Church of God in Christ, a member of the International Business and Professional Women’s Federation COGIC, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Society of Success and Leadership (NSLS), the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration, Pi Alpha Alpha (PAA). Ross was named as of the 150 Most Influential Women of the Church of God in Christ (2015).
